I'm with you, Chris. If there were a data-enabled iPod touch with a camera and GPS, I'd buy it in a heartbeat and I'd figure out some way to buy one for each of my K-12 students as well. There are rumors of such a device coming from Google, carrier-independent to boot. I'll get in the first line that I see forming...

That's one of the few books by Stross I've read... it was a fun read. I also think we are experiencing exponential technological change (cf Ray Kurzweil) but I don't think positive change in the realm of education is a given by any means... the principles that inform productive use of technology are ancient (which fits perfectly with the notion that it isn't about the technology but the process and how tech provides affordances that can forward that process)-- from Plato and Socrates forward-- but there's a loooong history of education not just being resistant, but ultimately succeeding in marginalizing and finally ignoring those changes.

All the good reasons for carrying a phone (I HATE talking on the phone) have nothing to do with the phone part!

All the goodness of the iPhone comes from it being a mini-computer-- if the iTouch had the camera and GPS I'd almost never even think of the iPhone...

This information is so valuable. I am primary school teacher and I am responsible for Design Technology and ITC! I am forever struggling to gather imagery for many if not all of the projects I deliver. So often I spend evenings and weekends out with my camera and I also arrange for sessions for the children to go out and about to make images that we can use. Albeit this is educational in itself - the professionalism I am trying to teach is compromised my poor imagery! So thank you for this - the information is worth its weight I gold and now I can spend my weekends and evenings concentrating solely on my marking!! Gr8 stuff !!

I haven't read that, John, but I've just placed an order at Amazon on your recommendation.

Why do some institutions--notably education, particularly K12--actively resist getting on the curve? It's got to be more than just money.

Thanks for this resource which I never new was available. I have had some images of my work used by a person without permission and I know how this feels. I spent quite a bit of time and money getting my jewellery photographed and it is unfair when your photos are ripped off.
I will be using this resource for some projects which are on the go and I will feel suitably cherrubic for doing the right thing.Good on you for doing the right thing with your students and fellow teachers. Its all too easy just to go along with the crowd and use photos without permission...good on you
Thanks again

Brilliant! Have you read Accelerando by Charles Stross... I believe we are in a state of exponential change in at least a half dozen technology horizons. Institutions, especially of the educational variety, continue to change linearly with a low slope. Visualize how silly policies prohibiting cell phone/mobile devices in schools will seem a few years from now.

I had not heard of Flickr Storm before. As someone who builds websites, I appreciate the info as it is difficult and sometimes expensive to find quality photos.

Skip-
You are right-these are great devices, filled with helpful, useful applications, and they just happen to reside on a cell phone. The possibilities are endless.
I am encouraged that you are an open minded person, who is willing to learn new things and embrace change. It is o.k. to let change happen......

Flickr has come a long way to discourage the use of non licensed photos. It appears they are working hard to address copyright issues. As a semi-professional photographer who has had work "borrowed" I can really appreciate their efforts.

Your post was very enlightening and thank you.
