Fo’ Shizzle
(A little bit about Roseanne)

Hello. My name is Roseanne and I am a 17 years old attending Nelson Island High School in Toksook Bay. I was raised by my young parents Brenda and Robert. My parents have five children, of which I was the first born. I have three brothers and two annoying sisters (not to be mean). I lived most of my life in Toksook Bay. When I was a kid, before my sisters were born, we used to live in Bethel for four years and in Akiachak for two years. A couple of years later after my sixth birthday, we moved to Toksook Bay, when I was just in kindergarten. On my 15th year of living life, I, myself out of all my family, moved in Bethel for one whole year with my mom’s sister Peggy and her husband. After one long year passed, I moved back to Toksook Bay.
I wanted to come to Talent Search because I love to travel any where and any place to camp and learn new things I never ever learned before in my whole entire life. Ever since I was 12 years old I traveled to different places mostly in the summer for the things I applied for. Because I never participated in Talent Search, I decided to make a claim for college camp before the school was over.
The best part of Talent Search so far is taking a trip to different places for us to learn new things we never learned before. I’m actually really talking about flight school and bank thing. The most excellent I like about the Talent Search is the students that are here with me. THEY ROCK!
In Toksook Bay I love to go walking and cruising all-around riding with my brother’s snow machine and my four-wheeler with my best friend Laura and Allison. Every year in August I commonly love to go camping with my family to collect 5 or more buckets full of salmon berries, blue berries, black berries, and red berries for our own traditional food during the winter months. Because I’m still a young lady, I love to play a little outside sometimes with my little brothers and sisters just to have some fun and make the time fly by faster. We also build up memories while were still living life.
My brothers and sisters are all younger then my age. Moses, my mom’s first son acts like he’s the oldest child in the family. He claims every thing that’s in our house except for girlie substances. My brother Junior, who is named after my dad, eats every thing that’s set on my parents table. The fourth girl Cecelia loves to clean up and complete things on her own. My youngest brother Mark is very naughty and mischievous. I don’t know what to say about him. And last but not least, my youngest sister Sammie is 6 years young. She’s very spoiled. She has to get a hold of everything she wants to or else she’ll scream all day and all night.
My goal is to graduate from high school. I want to achieve my goals because I want to attend college in KUC. And after I’m finished with college I want to become a pilot in Bethel. My dream ever since I was just a kid is flying around the world and seeing things I have never seen before.

Sherry’s-Ooh Lala Talent Search!

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Hey, my name is Sherry and I’m from a village called Kasigluk. I wanted to come to Talent Search to learn more about college and meet new people. The best part of Talent Search so far was that we went kayaking the first night we came here, learning how to be independent and playing pool. I like to have fun times with my friends, play volleyball and other sports. I want life to be fun and enjoyable. My favorite subjects in school are Math and P.E. I like other classes, but I like those two the best. My family is just like an ordinary family. I have my mom, dad and my three brothers. Like I said, I live in Kasigluk, but I might move to Tununak this year because my dad has a job there as a V.P.O (Village Police Officer). My goals are to finish high school (in three more years, including this year) and college (in four years). I want to become a math teacher because I enjoy math a lot. In the future I want to have a family after I have everything accomplished. I hope I’ll have a lot more fun for the rest of the week. From the friends I make and the things I learned, I’ll probably remember this week for the rest of my life.

The Inside Scoop of Nicole

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Hello, my name is Nicole and I am from Kasigluk. I applied for Talent Search because I wanted to have fun and learn more about college, and other school related-facts. The best parts about Talent Search so far are learning how to be independent, getting to know the students I’ am here with, and doing all sorts of activities. I like hanging out with my friends and having a great time, being on the computer, playing different sports, being myself and joking around, and going four-wheel riding. I don’t have a big family. I’m the youngest of three sisters and one brother. Kasigluk is my hometown. There are many amusing stuff we do there like: going riding, playing ball, hanging around town, and playing dumb.. There’s some boring moments but making it fun and enjoying it all is great. My goals in life are to finish high school and go to college. I want to become a teacher but I’m not sure, (still deciding). Probably I would like to have a family and live in a city but we’ll see where life takes me. I’m having a really great time here!

Crooked Creek my home in Alaska.

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

7/16/08
Hi my name is Brandon and I’m from Crooked Creek. I wanted to come to Talent Search to learn something new and get my grades higher. I learned a lot of things from the teachers, things that make it easer to write and get it done. The best part of camp so far was watching movies in the Maggie Lind building. There we can watch the scariest or the funniest movies we want to. The things I’m interested are getting good grades and my work done, but my math needs work so I’m interested in taking math classes. I live in Crooked Creek, a small town. It’s like two towns one on a hill there is no stores or companies on the hill just old people and fishermen. The seconded town near the river has the stores and one or two companies working to get money for Crooked Creek. It’s a great town and I love it. I want to finish high school and start a career in the military. After I’m finished with the military I’m going to college and get a good job when I’m done. Then I might have a wife and two kids.

MARY’s PROfile

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Hello, my name is Mary and I’m from Toksook Bay. I’m here at Talent Search this summer because I wanted to be here and get a little taste of how some people experience the college life. The best part of this whole experience is that I am getting information I need in order to get started with my life after high school.

I’m interested in a health occupation. Someday I want to work at the Sub-regional Clinic at Toksook Bay and help my people. My family is really encouraging me to go to college, come back, and help our community. I have my parents and my five brothers and three sisters (all of whom are older than I am except for one brother) to support me. And speaking of having a big support group, our village of about 600 people, is very supportive and helpful when working as a community to get the youth to succeed.

My goal right now as a high school student is to graduate and get my diploma. But after high school I would like to go off to college and graduate. Then I would like to have a real good career in the health field. To be specific, I am not too sure of what I want to do, maybe Nursing. After getting a real good job, I would like to raise a family.

It’s Only Fair

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

I thought that since we are having the students at this weeks Talent Search camp write up a little blog, that I should have to do it too! I’m glad you all have decided to come to the Talent Search camps this summer. I just wish the weather would cooperate with us a little more. It’s tough to find things to do when it’s raining all of the time. Please comment on what you would like to see different at the camps. We are trying to make these camps something you want to come back to year after year and we can only do this if you let us know what you want!!!

If there are any specific pictures you remember that I don’t have uploaded send us an email and I’ll send you the jpg for that picture. I will start working on the 2008 pictures later this week. Remember, if you have any questions or just need to talk, give us a call or email! We are here to help each and every one of you.

Many of you may think that Talent Search is only some that happens during the summer here in Bethel, but we are actually available to the students during the school year too. If you are having problems with homework, send us an email and we will try to help. If you need someone to talk to, I guarantee that we will be the best listener out there. Where did the summer go?

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

Ah, it’s great to be back to the wonderful work world. Okay, maybe great is a strong word, but you have to love the paychecks again! Alot has happened since I last updated this blog. First of all, did this summer fly by fast or what. I remember when we had our first group of campers come in on June 10. Thirty 11 & 12 year olds who some were away from their families for the first time sounds like a challenge but I’m proud to say we didn’t have to send anyone home for being homesick though :) We had a great bunch of students throughout all 5 of our camps. We had about 160 students from over 20 villages throughout the delta. Students had fun going on field trips, having guest speakers, shopping and I can’t forget kayaking. Oh yeah, they did also learn a little about college and different careers! Some of the high school students even had the opportunity to do some job shadowing with Yuut Yaqungviat. I promise I’ll get some pictures posted in the next few weeks so you all can check out the fun we had.

Well, I’m going to sign off for now, but I promise this year I’ll be updating this thing more often. ~Amy

I would like to hear from this summer’s NXT robotics students

Monday, July 16th, 2007

I wanted to get this blog started while I was still teaching the robotics classes for the first 4 weeks of students, but didn’t have a chance to do it then. I did create a detailed blog on my own school webpage and you can view and reply to lots of blog entries and photos there. I will continue to add more items like the radio station interviews, more photos, and movies in the near future. The web address for me at my school is www.anoka.k12.mn.us/ovms.mr.keeney

I would really like to have my Talent Search robotics students keep in touch with me to tell me how they liked the summer camp this year. I also want you to tell me how your school year is going once school starts in the fall. It would be nice to know how many of you are doing robotics at your school. I would be glad to give you any suggestions or help with problems you might have in the future. I will be adding more things about robotics to my school website in the future that might help you, or so you can find out about my FIRST LEGO League teams this year.

My website has a link to email me, or you can email me directly at paul.keeney@anoka.k12.mn.us

Have a great rest of the summer!
Paul

College Camps Underway

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Wow! Has it really been almost a month since I’ve updated the Talent Search Blog! Things have flown by so fast. We just finished up our second camp. The kids have been learning about robotics, science, writing & reading, career exploration and of couse what would the Talent Search camps be without KAYAKING! Weeks 1 & 2 were filled with 29 students each from 16 different villages (including Bethel). This past week we had KYUK come over and do a story on the Robotics class. I’ll post a link to the mp3 file when we get a copy. The students are having a blast and once I get all of the kinks worked out I’ll start having some fun to! I don’t have alot of time know, but next time I’ll add some pictures for you to check out!

College Camps Start June 10

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Hi Everyone,
I hope you all have been having a good summer. I’ve been busy getting the Talent Search College Camps lined up for all of you lucky students! We are excited to be offering some of you the opportunity to work with Robotics. The rest of you will be focusing on Rockets. Even the younger students will have the opportunity to experiment with some rockets. We are also lining up visits from various townspeople to come and talk to all of you about their jobs and their education that got them to their jobs.

Students that were accepted to the June 10-15 camp will be receiving a call next week to let them know what flights they will be on. I also want to remind you to fill out the Summer Food Service Program form. These forms will give us the added benefit of receiving USDA funds to guarantee that you get some great food to eat.

I hope everyone is excited about coming to Bethel and living in the dorms!!!!!! I can’t wait to meet you all. ~ Amy

Talent Search Application Deadline Passed

Monday, April 30th, 2007

Thank you to all the applicants that applied for our Summer College Camps.  The final application deadline was this past Friday (April 29).  I am happy to say that we have received over 200 applications.  Unfortunately this means that there will be a few people that will not have a chance to attend our camps this summer.  The 11 & 12 year olds sent in a total of 120 applications.  I’m excited to see that there are so many eager students in the YK Delta that want to come to Bethel for a week to learn about college.  Letters letting you know if you were accepted into the camps should be coming out within the next couple of weeks.  If for any reason you cannot attend now please let us know as soon as possible because we have a waiting list of eligible students that would love to take your place:)  If you don’t get accepted this year, don’t be discouraged.  Apply again next year and you will receive priority on your application for the 2008 Talent Search Camps.  Thank you all and I wish we could bring you all to Bethel for this wonderful opportunity.

Intro to the New Program Director

Monday, February 19th, 2007

I would like to take this time to introduce you all to the new Project Director for the Talent Search program. Me! I’m Amy Gronke and new to Bethel and Alaska since September, but have been thoroughly enjoying my time here. Before moving here, I spent the past 2 years at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming doing community enrichment programs. I grew up on a small dairy farm in Northeast South Dakota. I went to college at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. Here I got my BS in Environmental Management and MS in Biological Sciences. I’m excited to be here in Bethel working with the Kuskokwim Campus on a program as great as Talent Search. I look forward to interacting with all of you. Keep checking back for more posts as the year continues on!

KuC Talent Search Program

KuC Talent Search Program - Recruitment – KuC hosts over 200 students at the Bethel Campus each summer. Students participate in career and academic pathway exploration as well healthy lifestyle activities. Advanced students participate in Rocket Science curricula with TCUP faculty; instructors Dan Solie and Bob Brown.

These students are nutured and hopefully leave the campus with a positive ‘first’ college experience.  Watch as Drs. Brown and Solie nurture our students through their first ’serious’ rocket experience.

Talent Search Kayaking

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

By Daria

Marshall, AK

The activity I enjoyed the most this week was when we went kayaking. It was the first time for me to kayak by myself so it was an exciting experience. My group, the “Chosen Ones,” went to Hangar Lake with Ryan and John. First, we rode in the two vans over to Hangar Lake. Second, Ryan handed paddles out to us and demonstrated how to use them. He said the paddles were called “feathered”, which means the blades are not straight. You have to grip the right side then twist the paddle a little to use the left side. When I first learned how to use the paddle, I thought it would be really difficult because I didn’t know how. However, when I actually tried it out, it turned out to be quite easy. After he demonstrated how we use our paddles, he talked to us about keeping our balance if we are close to tipping over. Ryan showed us that if we try to balance with our heads, then we would tip over. He said that we should not use our upper bodies and heads, but our lower bodies and hips. Ryan also showed us how to move our hips if we were about to tip over. After he was done showing us how to move our hips, he pulled all of us out one by one and tested us to see if we could keep our balance. Finally, we were on our own!

One of the funniest things that happened in Hangar Lake was when Ben from Hooper Bay tried to splash me with his paddle and tipped over. It started off when we I was going towards him and he said he was going to splash me. I told him that I was not going to splash him, but he tried to splash me anyways. While he was trying, I looked away and all of a sudden, I heard someone hollering. I looked back and I noticed that he fell in. I laughed like a hilarious, hyper hyena floating on the kayak.

After we finished kayaking, we followed our team leader John to shore. While I was floating closer and closer to shore, John started walking over to me and intentionally tipped me over. Before we came back to Campus, John told us that we were allowed to swim until we get ready to go home.

Kayaking was my favorite activity this week because I never kayaked on my own before, so it was a new experience. Ryan also told us that learning how to paddle and keepour balance is similar to life. He said that we have to work to keep our kayak from tipping over. It is like high school and college; we have to find the right path in order to accomplish our goals in life and to keep ourselves up and going. I will use what I learned for the rest of my high school years, and hopefully also in college.
