Another Camp Season Over

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Well, we are officially done with the Talent Search College Camps for the the summer of 2008. We had a very successful summer with many returning students and many new students. We had over 100 students from all over the YK Delta, including Bethel. The students enjoyed many activities from learning about college to career exploration to having fun kayaking on Hangar Lake.

I will slowly be getting the pictures uploaded to the flickr website for all of you to see. I have just finished uploading the pictures from the first week of camp (June 8-13). Click on the flickr link there over on the right hand side. Come on, you know you want to do it. See, isn’t that much better! Enjoy the pictures.

Playing Poker!

Friday, July 18th, 2008

This is a game that i didn’t know how to play, until last night. Every game we played, it got easier and easier. The first time I played, I thought I was going to lose to Charles but I didn’t. He said it was beginners luck. That was the game I liked playing this week.

What I learned…

Friday, July 18th, 2008

About what I learned about a potential career about Yuut Yaqungvaat (Flight School) is about how to fly a plane. This guy who’s a friend, his name is Lewis of Kongiganak (Kong for short). anyways he was talking about to learn math for a job. So you’ll have to get a diploma for college and for work right after the graduate from college. Then, came an easy challenge for me for what it’s like flying in the air with an Tengsuun (Plane) right by playing this game on a computer called “Flight Simulator”. Well it is a fun game to play but you got to be serious in this flight school. Then, I let go of the yolk right away I said, “Look, no hands!!” then these people started laughing at my joke. so I already know how to fly a plane with no hands…but nervous to fly one. So that’s what I learned at flight school. How to fly a plane.

The Scavenger Hunt

Friday, July 18th, 2008

There was an activity we did here at Talent Search; a scavenger hunt in the Cultural Center library. It was exciting and competitive. Fourteen students were split into two groups and I happened to be in the second group. Both groups were given a sheet of paper for every student. And we had many different options of finding the answers. We were able to ask people around, look into the books, and use the computers for the internet. And the first place winners would get a prize.
After a while of searching for the answers on our sheet of paper, we kind of slowed down when the first team was winning. But we finished our work anyway. Hector, the instructor started checking the answers like he was grading them. Even when we finished second place, we had better answers. So we got the first place. And our prize was to line up first in line for the ice cream. There were different options of flavor and toppings and everything. And the ice cream was great!

The number one activity that I would choose is kayaking. Kayaking is fun because you get to have free time. Drifting and floating across the river, many of the students from different villages experience many different things about kayaking. One of the most important things about kayaking is balance. Balance is the key for different causes. Flipping over will be a fear for many beginners because, there are mostly beginners. This potential career that I learned about was interesting. You might have to have many skills and abilities for this job. This job might require college degrees, experienced many different jobs, and so on. Maybe not, I think I forgot the information that was required for the job. I wasn’t that amazed because I have been on this website for a while. Still learning about jobs, I managed to find a couple good jobs for I. Okay bye.

Guitar Hero II

Friday, July 18th, 2008

The other day, we played Guitar Hero II with our small groups. Guitar Hero II is a guitar game that you could play on the T.V. and it has many different types of songs on it. There’s 2 guitar type controllers or something to play. It mostly has rock, punk rock, or something to choose. I think that was the best part of Talent Search.

Oh Snap!!

This week we played I think its called have you or something like that. How to play the game is where you put the chairs in a circle but one person has to be standing. Then that person will say if we did this or this and then if you have you have to move to another chair before it gets taken. The person who was standing also moves to the chair and the person with out a chair thinks of a different thing to say. I learned a potential career about me, I joke. I learned that potential career is important for people who are looking for jobs.

Have You Ever?

Friday, July 18th, 2008

A game that I really liked when I first time played it. It was very fun when you have to say Have You Ever….. Say what you did before. If u didn’t understand what they have done or what you haven’t done what they said that you haven’t done you have to stay on your sit. That was the best game I have ever played. It was fun hardcore!! Its a game I have learned.

College!

Friday, July 18th, 2008

During a week of staying here I learned many facts about college life. Cindy talked to us about applying to college, getting scholarships, loaning, saving up money, and parts of getting jobs. Applying for scholarships may be boring but writing a essay is better than loaning a couple of thousand dollars. College may be a challenge but having a positive attitude and succeeding will do you great!

The activity I have done during Talent Search was being on the computer and chatting with friends, learning how to play pool, shopping at AC and Swansons, walking around with friends at pinkys park, taking pictures, making friends with every one in here, and learning how to be in college. I think the best part of the activity was being on the computer and getting to know every one!
I learned how to find a job through internet after I achieve my goals in college. I also learned how to have a big paying job. But, my dream is to become a pilot.

Watching a movie

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Last night, we were watching this movie called The Eye. This was a horror movie like all the other similar like ones. But I’d have to say this was the “Bestest” movie. so any ways…with the way it sounded like was that it is a horror movie, just like when you’re getting killed by some mysterious murderer. But this scarier one was called Shutter the one that just got out. so yeah, it was the funnest week here in Sackett Hall, the Community Center, and the KuC building. The “Bestest” week of my life.

Have you ever?

Friday, July 18th, 2008

The activity I kind of liked and enjoyed was Have You Ever. It’s a game we played with Jennifer during the week. We got to know each other and learned a lot of things. The purpose of the game was to communicate, team work, and getting to know each other a little more. There was seven chairs and the leader whom was Jennifer was in the middle. She’d ask us ” Have you ever done this?” and then if we tried or done that thing, we’d try sit down on the chairs. It’s similar to musical chairs, but when a person doesn’t get a chair they get to talk in the middle and ask the question “Have you ever done this?” It’s a fun game!

Talent Search Is a Funni-qan when there are lots of People

Hi, my name is Adrian and I’m from Kwigillingok. I wanted to come to this camp to learn more stuff that I don’t know. The best part of this camp is going out kayaking and playing pool with friends. I am interested on going to the trips that are fun to do in this camp.
I have five brothers Noah Jr, Ishmael, John, and Ephraim, two sisters, Missy and Candida, and one adopted brother, Randell. We always watch out for each other.
My brothers and I always go hunting together, and fishing.
My hometown is kind of fun. I like to fish, four wheel, dirt bike, bicycle, boat ride, play basketball, swim and high jump with a bicycle from board to board. It’s fun when we play ball before curfew. Lots of people go, even the girls, too. But sometime men don’t like to play with girls.
My goals are going to collage and go to pluming after collage. After pluming is over ill go back home to my hometown Kuigilnguq. If my village had no jobs I will try go to the villages that have work. I would look for lots of jobs in other hometowns and if I get rich I will try to have a vacation with my family.

My present and future life!

Hello everyone my name is Adrian, and I am from Marshall Alaska. I am fifteen years old, sixteen in one more month. The reason why I wanted to come to Talent Search is because I want to learn something and make new friends. The best part of the camp was when we drove to A.C. on the 15th. I think it was the best part is because we got to go shopping for stuff like movies, clothes etc. Right now I am interested in going to college at UAF in Fairbanks to become a pilot. In my family I have 7 sisters and 4 brothers. Their names are Ephraim, Xenia, Vassily Sr., Palassa, Natalia, Tatiana, Nastasia, Brandon, Kimberly, Donald, and Sophia. Those are my entire brothers and sisters that live with me.
My Goal is to graduate high school and get a diploma. Again, after I graduate I’ll attend UAF at Fairbanks. If I succeed then I’ll become a pilot for the rest of my life. Those are all my goals before and after I graduate. Well that’s pretty much of what I want to become and y’all have a great summer.

The oldest is Peter, the third is Jerilyn, the fourth is Julian, and the last one is my best baby sister, Angel. My parents are James and Sophie. My goal is to get into college after graduation. Talent Search Hardcore
My name is Kristen and, I am from Kwigillingok. I wanted to come to this campus is because I wanted to learn was to be around people I didn’t know at first. I wanted to Have fun and try things I haven’t tried before. The other reason why I wanted to come is to make new friends, and I have friends now. I wanted to learn what I never knew. The best part of Talent Search is playing pool with friends and, playing games with the leaders, too. We get on free time on computer and sometimes and, play card games. We all get along with the people we didn’t know and that’s good. The best thing we did is watch a scary movie when we had nothing to do and it was pretty scary. My interests are to have Talent Search again next year, and have college here after graduating from high school. KUC is the best place to be and go to college. I would get a dirt bike, four wheel, and boat to travel in tundra when I grow up.
My hometown is sometimes fun, when you have to see some friends when we have nothing to do. I have lots of fun when there are lots of people on the basketball court. Kwiggers like to play basketball; so do I. Most of my friends are my family. In my family I have 3 brothers Michael, Patrick, Justin and I have 2 sisters Melanie and Christina. I have two parents who raised me well, Benjamin and Gail Daniel. All my family is everything to me and I really love them no matter what they always do to me, and I will always love them all, even my relatives.
My goals for schooling are to graduate from high school and try to get a college degree here in Bethel. If I graduate from college I would want to be in the army or a pilot. While I am in those I would want to think of things I want to do. I don’t know about life right now. I work for who I am, try hard to do things, and get things done.

Waqaa, my name is Miranda and I’m from Atmautluak, Ak. I am seventeen years old and moving on to 10th grade. I was born on in 1991 at Anchorage. I wanted to come here to Talent Search to learn more about college, so I can know what it will be like in the future. I also wanted to meet new friends from different villages, and go away from home for a while.
The best part of Talent Search were meeting new friends, playing some activity games, watching a scary movie, learning new stuff, and being on the computer. I also had fun over at Yuut Yaqungviat because we were playing with the flight simulator and checking out an airplane.
In my hometown, I like to play basketball, and go walking, riding, biking, and swimming with my friends and relatives. I also like to go and pick berries when it’s windy out, help my mother cut many different kinds of fish, and help out my brother sometimes with whatever he need help with. Most of the time, I stay home cleaning up, listening to music, and doing something when there’s anything to do.
In my family, I have 2 older brothers, 1 older sister, and my niece. Their names are Maurice, Marcus, Molly, and Margo. My parent’s names are Morris and Mary Lou. All my family’s first name starts with M’s and I think that’s cool!
After I graduate from high school, I’m interested in becoming a commercial airplane pilot and flying for one of the airlines here at Bethel. I want to become a pilot because I’ve been flying many times during Talent Search. I think it was really fun.
