Update
These last few days, we have participated in many activities, things like a day long hike, lots of archaeological digging, and a midterm test for anthropology. The hike was awesome. We walked along the tops of the bluffs for three miles. The view was incredible, you could see for miles. Our turn around point was another inlet that had a nice beach. We made a fire and cooked dinner. After eating a few of us had fun skipping rocks, just having fun. The hike back was killer. We were all full from lunch, making the hike feel especially long. We got back to camp and were really tired so we went to bed.
The digging is becoming more and more interesting. As we continue scraping and shoveling, we are finding older and “cooler” artifacts. We dug for almost 3 hours the other day, and found the following: bones from all kinds of animals, metal drums, old knives, bottles, marbles, and beads. There’s a lot more to archaeology than I thought. After digging, you have to sift the dirt, and then wash the artifacts you find with toothbrushes. Altogether its been really interesting.
The midterm wasn’t too bad. It was before that made it stressful. I felt like I was back in school studying at the end of the year. I had to read many pages from the text and take many pages of notes. The night before, I looked over them and did some last minute reading. I’m glad it’s over with. I’m looking forward to this last week of camp. We’re supposed to go kayaking and participate in some over night hikes. We’ll keep you posted!

How old were the artifacts?

Thanks for writing a complete update. We have been wondering if you all had just gone out to sea.
The “digs” sound very cool. Is there a way for you to estimate the age of the artifacts?
Metal fuel drums?? That would not appear to be very old. What do you do with the artifacts? Do you log the location? Photograph them? Will these go to a museum? It seems a privilege that NIMA is allowing you the experience.
The hikes sounds fabulous.

Just now saw the new set of photos added. GREAT shots. Very interesting topography.
Questions: Will you introduce the elder(s) in your photos and explain what she is teaching you…about plants?
Is that the vertebrea of a whale in the photo?
What are you looking at in the microscopes?
What’s the story on the stone piles?
The 3 quys with the (reindeer ?) skull…did they drift in on the raft?
The only sign of food in your photos is PLANTERs peanuts. Hope you are getting more than that. How about a photo of one of your meal times? MREs for hikes?
Is that one boat in the photo a skin boat? Canvas?
Has the weather improved? Looks reasonable in the photos. Any kayaking yet?

the age of the artifacts we’ve found so far arent too old. within a hundred years, except a few things. an arrow head we found was way older though, maybe 1500 years. pretty cool stuff. oh yea, i found a penny that was dated 1939.
