iTeach
Held each Spring on the Fairbanks Campus, iTeach is a
popular annual on-site clinic in online course development, delivery,
and assessment sponsored by the UAF Center for Distance Education.
Participants come from around Alaska and all three University of Alaska
Academic Units for a week of intensive training and development based
on the UA delivery systems, critical pedagogy, established best
practices, and emerging technologies.
iTeach 2007 will be held May 21-25, 2007.
The application period for iTeach 2007 is now closed. Notifications
will be sent out 4/2/07.
Eligibility
iTeach is open to UA faculty and adjunct faculty who will be
delivering a distance education course in the immediate upcoming academic term.
Applications for iTeach are competitive and selections are primarily based on creating a diverse but functional learning cohort.
iTeach Philosophy
iTeach is based on a few fundamental premises:
- Good distance education is not about transfer of face-to-face teaching strategies, but transformation of the curriculum and learning environment.
- Sound course development depends on a coherent framework based on desired outcomes and understandings.
- Technology must come second and be in service of teaching and learning
- Learning is-- to a large extent-- a social activity that depends on creating a functional classroom Community of Learners.
- Performance in a community involves social connections within the
Community of Learners and obligations embedded in the existing
Community of Practice.
- Bottom line: hands on work, no tricks, it's the teach not the tech.
the iTeach Curriculum
The iTeach curriculum includes topics such as:
- The Understanding by Design framework for curriculum development
- Effective use of UA Learning Management Systems (Blackboard and UAS Online)
- Using Elluminate Live
- Creating learning community with discussion boards, blogs, and wikis
- Creating and delivering audio, video and podcasting
- Classroom management: logistics, communication, community
- Creating and manipulating digital images
- Creating digital material: PDF, Powerpoint for Elluminate and Breeze, etc.
Other Benefits
iTeach sessions cover travel and expenses for selected
participants from outside the training areas. Participants earn a
$100/day stipend.
