Textbook There are two required texts for the class:
  • Dreamweaver Hands-On-Training
  • Fireworks Training from the Source
Materials Students will need paper, writing instruments, and some kind of digital storage device, preferably a flash (thumb) drive.
Software We will be using Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks CS3 and/or 8. This software is available in the UAF computing labs. It is possible to be successful in this course using only lab computers but you absolutely must plan on spending time in those labs every week… there will not be enough lab time during class hours to do all of the work.

This software is available through the UA Technology Center at a greatly reduced academic price.

Attendance and Homework Class attendance is mandatory unless arrangements are made in advance. Late homework will not be accepted without prior notice and permission, in which case full credit remains possible.
In-Class Behavior We are all adults, and I like to keep an informal atmosphere. However, take note of the following:
  • Feel free to call me “Chris” or “Mr. Lott” … not “Christopher” or “hey you” or “dude”.
  • Turn off cell phones and pagers or set them to vibrate/silent mode (phasers set to stun)
  • You may bring drinks and food (nothing too odorific please) to class— but if you spill it, you clean it (or buy the computer).
  • I am a professional and expect you to be— so try not to be late for class. But if you are, or if you have to leave early, please do so quietly. I would appreciate notice before class starts if you need to leave early.
  • Children that are old enough to occupy themselves are allowed in class if necessary. I will ask you to remove them if they become disruptive
  • There is no such thing as a stupid question… nor should you ever be embarrassed to ask me to slow down or backtrack. The nature of this course often makes it impossible for me to see when a student has questions— feel free to shout it out!
Contact and Communication Communication is a necessary part of any course, particularly when working with unfamiliar technologies.
  1. It is strongly suggested that you sign up for some kind of Instant Messenger client. I prefer Microsoft’s Instant Messenger, but I can also be reached using AOL IM, Yahoo IM, or Skype.
    • Did you know you can use IM without having to keep the client software installed! Use Meebo, the web-based IM service that allows you to use MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and AIM (one or all at the same time). You can also download the software and install it.
    • Once signed up, please add me to your contacts list. Be sure to say hi and let me know who you are! My MSN ID is chris@chrislott.org, AOL and Yahoo: uafchris, Skype is: chrislott.
  2. All Class Related Email must be sent to cios256@chrislott.org — any email sent to other addresses may be discarded unread.
  3. I will send mail to you only at the email address which you use on the class roster— or to other email addresses from which you send me mail. Let me know if your address changes!
  4. Communication by Phone (479–4770) or Fax (479–3443) is a last resort.
Academic Integrity Like all UAF Courses, this course adheres to the UAF Code of Conduct with regards to cheating, plagiarism, and general academic integrity and honesty. More importantly, academic dishonesty is offensive and ultimately only hurts you as a student. In the world of web design, a lot of learning happens by examining the work of others and participating in online communities. But, you can’t republish or use anyone else’s materials without securing permission from the owners of the page. Like anyone who create an artistic or intellectual product, people can get very testy when this happens, to the point of lawsuits and a black mark that will follow you around for many years (not to mention immediate failure in this class and possible academic sanctions and expulsion). If you have any questions or concerns, just ask. You will never get in trouble for inquiring!
Disabilities Services The Office of Disability Services implements the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and ensures that UAF students have equal access to the campus and course materials. I will work with the Office of Disabilities Services (203 WHIT, 474–7043) to provide reasonable accommodation to students with disabilities.
