The ability to annotate photos, with a premium placed on annotations that can be attached to— or otherwise associated with— a particular area of a photo.

Discussion

Although there is at least one blog plugin that provides the ability to attach annotations directly to regions of a photo, flickr is the prototypical example of this ability.

Example(s)

Using Flickr for art education is an obvious (in retrospect) use of flickr annotations (notes). Here is an example of students’ annotations, identifying characteristics that make a Renaissance era painting:
