1. Overview of the Whiteboard
In the above workspace: “Good morning” is written in different languages, both by typing and freehand writing and in different colors. Clip Arts (the coffee Mug and the Smiling Face) have been inserted thru the “Select and Stamp an Image on the screen” tool (screen capture) in the Toolbar, and an image has been snapped using the same tool.
2. How to use the Whiteboard?
The whiteboard is the main presentation window in ELive! it is used either as a presentation tool or a work area where attendees can write, draw, type, import files, images and clip arts, etc. The moderator manages and controls the screens, the screen content and the participant’s access to these screens.
The Whiteboard offers great opportunity for interactions, especially in small groups! So, be creative, courageous and spontaneous! Open new blank screens and improvise! Do not be afraid to try new ideas in using the whiteboard collaboratively with your students.
More information can be found on the elluminate webiste, check: Whiteboard Tools Quick Reference and Quick Reference for Loading presentations
Moderator’s Guide pages 93 to 159.
In addition, you can listen to an introductory recording found on the elluminate website: Recording1 and Recording2
3. How to use the Whiteboard effectively?
- Use it as a regular whiteboard, chalk board or flip chart in a face-to-face class: Write, draw or type on the board, and encourage students to do so too. Try solving problems together, discussing solutions, brainstorming, visualization, collecting responses, and sharing ideas. Remember that all objects on the whiteboard can be edited!
NB you can also use a Pen Tablet to make writing and drawing on the Whiteboard easier and smoother.
- You can allow multiple people to write at the same time on the whiteboard.
- You can take snap shot of images or applications on your own computer that you can paste to the whiteboard and have a palette of electronic tools to work with.
- You can use games and simulations on the whiteboard, as part of the Active Learning strategy.
- As a presentation tool, ideas can be recorded and student interactions can be saved. The power point presentation is Static, so try to get some creative ways to change that. For example:
- Content can be highlighted.
- You can annotate the presentation using the different tools.
- You can use a white box, and cover some of the materials, and then move it down so you make the presentation more dynamic.
- You can customize your Clip Arts and you can share them with your students.
- The Whiteboard screens can be controlled, (copy, paste, delete, rename, rearrange order of the screens) : Tools → Whiteboard → Explore Screens
- The Whiteboard screens can be saved and printed for later use!
- The moderator can check “who is doing what” on the screen: : Tools → Whiteboard → Explore Objects
- Hands-on training/demonstration: During the first session or during training, Snap Shot the entire Elive! interface would be a great idea to “show” the features of ELive! and give instructions on “how to” use the features. (You can also use also Application Share the entire interface)
- Take a Snap Shot of the quick Polling results and share them with the other attendees. (You can also Application Share the Polling results).
- In Loading presentations:
- Keep an eye on the indicator lights next to each participant’s name so that you know if any are delayed (orange indicator) in receiving whiteboard content or not yet seeing (red indicator) the current slide.
- For some Mac users who are unable to load the PowerPoint presentations directly onto the whiteboard: You can save the slides in the presentation as individual images and then load the images onto the Elluminate Live! whiteboard.
4. Sharing Documents in a Web Conference
The new version of Elluminate Live! (version 7) has a feature called File Transfer where one can send content directly from Elluminate. As for the current version of ELive, take a look at our Best Practices for Sharing Documents:

5. Problem Based Learning
There are many different types of icebreakers and interactive activities that can be devised for use in the whiteboard area. Click: view some examples.
