1. Overview of the Participant Window
Good news: Did you notice that in this window you can see your students’ names? So, you do not have to struggle anymore with memorizing all the names!! especially in a large class!
An example of the participant window and how to try to get the students involved as much as possible:
Activity Indicators:
Note that when anyone in the session is using a feature a yellow halo shows behind the icon next to their names. When delays or problems(in Audio, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and Video camera) occur, there are two colored indicator lights that appear, red or orange or both.
In the capture above:
The capture has been taken from the moderator’s window, since it says (Moderator, Me) next to nfzgn
In this class, there are 5 learners, and this is what they are doing:
- Chris and Christen cannot chat since that privilege has been taken off by the moderator
- Chris is hosting and controlling an application sharing session
- Christen is using the microphone (Audio)
- Sage is chatting with the moderator and with Shauna
- Two learners raised their hands for questions, first Shauna and second Sage
- Zeina stepped out of the class (her name is in gray color and it says: Away)
2. How to use some features of the Participant Window effectively?
EMOTICONS
“Laughter, Confusion, Applause and Disapproval” emoticons are highly interactive!
The Emoticons feature is one of the most effective modes of communication in the Elive Session! It is easy to use, natural, spontaneous, visible and not disruptive!
RAISING HANDS
- Raising hands is best used when moderator is using the Audio, and the participant would like to interrupt, either to ask a question, to make a comment, or to take over the Audio. The moderator should encourage participants to raise their hands and interrupt at any time. Same applies when a participant is talking and other participants or moderator would like to interrupt
- If the moderator wants to pair the students for a Think-Pair-Share approach, then he asks the students to raise their hands. The participant who raises his/her hand first gets number 1 next to his name in the participant window. The next one gets number 2 next to his/her name, etc. Then, it would be easy for the moderator to pair them, for example, numbers 1 and 2 together, 3 and 4 together, etc
STEPPING AWAY
- The moderator should remind the participants to click on the “door with green arrow” (step away button) whenever the participant is stepping away physically from the Elive window. (When stepping away, the name will change into Italic grey). It is better that all the other users know that this person is not attending for few minutes, rather than being called upon and no answer from the other end! The participant should remember also to click again on that “door with red arrow” to let everybody knows that he is back
- At the beginning of the session, if moderator or participants log in early, then it would be nice to click on the “step away” button, until moderator steps back into the session and it is time to start. When taking a break, do the same
