Example Switching Teams

This activity is applicable to many different disciplines

Aim/Purpose:

  • Generate Discussion and Critical thinking
  • Encourage collaboration among students
  • Help build a community of learners

Design:

Before the session:

Step 1: The moderator prepares the questions

Step 2: The moderator provides group work instructions in the Student Guide & course code of conduct and emails or includes it as a document in Blackboard to the participants before the session.

Step 3: The moderator creates breakout rooms, copies the slide that shows the questions in the whiteboard to each of their whiteboard slides (Effective Use of the Whiteboard)

In the session:

Step 1: Participants are given a set time and are put in small groups. The number of participants in each group should be the same for this activity. The moderator moves from room to room to assist as necessary and to ensure that students are on track. Once time is up and all the questions have been discussed, then the moderator asks each participant to pick a number starting from 1 until everyone in the group has a number.

Step 2: Number 1s of each group form a new group. Number 2s of each group form another group and so on. Every member of the new group shares with the rest of the new group all the discussion from the previous groups and decide whether they agree or disagree with each other.

Step 3: Once time is up, all students are moved to the main room, and written reports of results will be discussed.
