1. Direct Messaging
Direct Messaging is a text-based communication that allows real time delivery on ELive! The messages can be public or private, it is color-coded:
Black if message is public (sent to everyone in the session)
Blue if private (you send or receive a private message)
Red if private (a participant sends a private message to another participant)
An example of Direct Messaging window during a session:
Direct Messages can be saved and printed, resized, filtered (moderator may wish to view only certain messages), tracked when messages were sent by clicking on the Display date and time icon, and even if participant has no privilege of using the Direct Messaging, he/she can still send a private message to the moderator(s).
More information can be found on the elluminate webiste, check: Quick Reference Guide for Moderators and
Moderator’s Guide pages 85 to 91.
2. How to use Direct Messaging effectively?
- The Direct Messaging window is:
- The safest area for participants where they feel at ease and they can write freely, especially when they feel intimidated by the new technology and/or new people in the class.
- The most important area for the moderator. Through practice, he/she will learn to keep an eye in the Direct Messaging window in order to keep track of the responses, questions, inquiries, interactions and reactions of the participants at all time, while using the other features of Elive!
- Direct Messages may be used for introductions or brainstorming activities
- Group work can be effectively accomplished with Direct Messages in order to help foster a community and social interactions and collaboration. Similar to the breakout rooms, the Direct Messages can be used for collaboration & group activities in introductions (icebreakers), brainstorming, open-ended questions and other related activities. In order to achieve this purpose, students by pairs or groups are asked to chat among each other privately, by clicking the drop-down menu, selecting the name of the participant or participants (see the Quick Reference Guide for instructions), writing the message and sending it. The moderator may view the group/pair conversations by using the Direct Messaging filter. Then all participants are required to share their findings and discussions with the rest of the class.
