1. Overview of the Audio

“Who is talking?”
Here is a screen capture of an actual classroom: (Arabic class online, March 9, 2006, Northwest campus, Insturctor: Zeina Nehme)
You see a yellow Halo behind the microphone indicator in the participant window, near the moderator’s name (ID), which means that the moderator is talking.
On the moderator screen, the TALK button changes into “ON THE AIR”. But not in this screen shot, since it was taken from a playback recording.
In the AUDIO WINDOW, by clicking on the TALK button, one is entitled to participate in conversations during the session. In the current version of ELive, only one person can talk at a time, but this will change in the newer version. To use the audio feature, your computer must have a sound card, microphone and speakers (or a headset).
Before your FIRST Elive Session (since settings will be saved in later sessions):
Use the Audio Set Up Wizard to configure your Audio: Tools → Audio →Audio Setup Wizard.
For more details, please take a look at the Moderator’s Guide in the elluminate Live website, pages 43 to 53.
During your session:: You may use the Audio window to
- Click on the TALK button or use the hotkeys (Ctrl+F2) in order to enable or disable the talk feature
- Control your microphone and speaker levels
- Control the participant’s microphone when he/she is talking (since the sound may be too loud or too low)
2. How to use the Audio effectively?
- At the beginning of every session, I would ask all participants to say hello and talk. It is a test for the Audio, even though it might be time consuming.
- While a participant is talking, if he/she forgets to turn off the microphone when done, or if something wrong happens and the Audio button is not clickable, then the moderator should take away the Audio privilege for that participant to end it.
- If the Audio is not working properly for a participant, then I would ask the participant to join the session by calling in using a telephone and hence, I would use the speakers instead of the headphones so that the participant can listen to all the conversations while being in the Elive session.
- While using other features of ELive, like Application Sharing or WebTour, and you and your students are outside of the Elive window, you can still control the Audio feature by using the Hot key: Ctrl+F2 to enable or disable the talk feature.
- Remember to close your ELive! session, make the required changes and then rejoin the session, if you would like to:
- Obtain audio from a different device (Audio Source)
- Plug in your headset or change your speaker’ source
Otherwise you will encounter problems in your ELive connection
